This Fickle Bounty is an archival art print from Noelle Phares's 2024 exhibition at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, exploring the Colorado River and its complex legacy in the American West.

The painting captures the Colorado River flowing beneath Glen Canyon Dam toward the Grand Canyon, with Lake Powell's waters sustaining communities like St. George, Utah visible in the composition. Phares depicts celebratory figures from St. George's history in the foreground, honoring the transformative impact the river once represented to the arid region.

Yet the work invites deeper reflection. While the dam and its reservoir continue to provide essential water and resources across the West, this piece acknowledges the ecological and hydrological realities we now understand—how precious and precarious this bounty has become.
